Late noise

Posted by chenglibrary on December 13, 2012

FROM: Bryan

FEEDBACK:  Hi,  it is a great idea that the library will be open until 2AM. On the other hand, many students make loud noises including: loud conversations, music with their headphones, and using phones. The noise bothers those students that they need to study. Thanks, Bryan

RESPONSE:

Dear Bryan:   I know how difficult it can be to study when others are making unnecessary noise.  Please feel free to let staff at either the Reference or Lending Service desks know of the problem and they will speak with the offending students.  In the evening, ask to speak to the Evening Supervisor who can often find quiet spaces away from the crowd.  We continue to work on other methods of noise control, but it is an uphill battle.  Perhaps your fellow students will read this and take the message to heart.

Good luck on your exams,

Anne Ciliberti, Dean of Library Services

FROM: Allen G.

FEEDBACK:  The only concern is that many students have loud conversations (phone or laughs)in the library(2nd floor. There should be some kind of control on this issue. Perhaps announce on the speaker once in a while or library personnel could walk around once in a while the library to enforce not to have loud voices. Also, there should be a section of the library where students can meet and talk about their assignments and another quiet section. Thank you.

RESPONSE:

Dear Allen G.:   Thank you for your feedback about noise on the second floor of the Library.  The entire second floor is designated a Quiet Zone, but the study areas in the front of the building are supposed to be Very Quiet.  This is a particularly difficult time of the semester and the Library is more crowded than usual. If you experience a noisy situation, please feel free to speak to a staff member at either the Reference or Lending Service desks and they will address the issue at that time.  Perhaps your fellow students will read this posting and realize how disruptive talking and laughing can be in a study area. Please note that the Friends Room on the first floor is a place where students may eat and chat. There are also study rooms on the second floor where groups of three or more can meet to work together.  I hope this information is useful to you; good luck with your end-of-semester exams and assignments.

Quiet Study Area

Posted by chenglibrary on December 22, 2011

FROM: mike

FEEDBACK:  to whom it may concern, it would be lovely if an employee(s) could be staffed upstairs permanently to enforce the quiet study area since there is always someone or a group loudly having a discussion without thinking about the people trying to study around them. its really becoming quite a nuisance, ive tried emailing the president of the university about this frequent problem, but to no avail. if upstairs is really a quiet study area then could we please enforce this. thank you.

RESPONSE:

Dear Mike:  Thank you for your feedback on this on-going issue. We understand your frustration and are looking into some new strategies to help manage the problem.  In the short term, however, please report the problem to staff in Lending Services or at the Reference Desk, at the time of the event…we can and will deal with the problem when we’re alerted.  Thank you again and be assured that we are working on some possible new ways to manage noise.

Best wishes,

Anne Ciliberti, Dean of Library Services

Lawn care outside the Library

Posted by chenglibrary on September 13, 2011

FROM: not a library problem but ….

FEEDBACK:

This is happening right outside of the library.  Why do they insist on mowing and weedwacking during lunch time?  Clearly every bench and picnic table is FULL of people.  Most of them are eating.  All of them are enjoying a break between classes.  Can mowing be sceduled in the morning or afternoon instead of ruining our LUNCH??? Please have some cinsideration wer’e trying to enjoy a nice day and this oblivious mower just spews noise zad weeds and dirt up all around us without a glance.

Can you pass this along to someone who can do something about this???

RESPONSE:

Thank you for sharing your feedback with me; I have forwarded your complaint to our Facilities Department for consideration.

Best wishes,

Anne Ciliberti, Dean of Library Services

FROM:

FEEDBACK:  I thought the library was supposed to be quiet. There’s too much talking and listening to music music.  Last night in one of the rooms sounded like a party was going on. Today someone was listening to music. You need more library personnel patroling the upstairs.

Dear Student:

Thank you for your feedback about noise in the Library.  It gives me an opportunity to remind Library users that they must be considerate of others and that noise often interrupts serious study and reading.  If you encouter others being loud (either music or conversation), you should feel comfortable approaching Library staff at either the Reference or Lending Service desks.  Staff will be glad to speak to the offending loud parties.  We do try to patrol the study areas, especially during busy times of the semester, but we do not always encounter the same groups as you!

Thank you again for your input.

Anne Ciliberti, Library Director
